A Georgia mom said her 13-year-old son was 15 minutes late for his 9:00 curfew and she did not allow him inside. He says he was forced to sleep on the patio. She was arrested for deprivation of a minor. However, there are many in the community who are saying she did the right thing.
Here are some of the comments:
“I would hire an attorney and sue. Deprivation of a minor?? She is trying to stop him from becoming a criminal. It’s none of the police business.”
“The article did not mention how many times prior to this incident has this juvenile broken his curfew? I do not know the circumstances of this family and I am of ‘the old school’ – trying to raise children to be decent citizens. The laws are FOR the disobedient children and AGAINST the parents that are making every effort to raise a good person. It would be interesting to get the WHOLE story – not only that Mom is in jail and the boy had to sleep on the porch. I try to have a negative position (very hard to do!) having raised 6 children, 5 of them boys, but that was back in the GOOD OLD DAYS.”
“Deprivation of a minor? Not really. He spent a night outside in his yard. With my kids, I knew what hurt the most… and it wasn’t a belt. You might lose your driving privileges, have your computer taken away, grounded, etc…. I did have one very resourceful son that messed with the phone line to get back online… smart kids can be a pain… lol.”
What do you think of these comments?
The boy’s older brother, who is 15, said he gave the boy a blanket and pillow. The next morning, when the mom left for work she told the older brother not to let the 13-year-old inside. The boys are in the care of their grandmother.
Obviously, there seems to be more to the store, but is there any instance where a mother should leave a child outside as punishment? There were a few people who said that she should have been happy he came home and taken away another privilege, not his bed.
