4.8 Million American college students are raising children. That means that about 26% of all undergraduate students have dependent children. Women make up about 71% of student parents. 43% of the total student parent population are single parents. Single fathers are about 11% of the student parent population.
This data was compiled by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research. These stats show the women are juggling children, jobs, and school. Another interesting fact is that 88% of single students with children have incomes at or below 200 percent of the poverty level.
While these numbers are surprising, they are a reminder that moms need support. If you have friends who are in school, with kids, and working, help them out if you can. If you can give them a meal or take their kids so they can study it could mean all the difference to them.
