Erratic driving in a Walmart parking lot isn’t that odd, but a New York woman was out of control. Carolyn Kesel was 20 miles from her home and driving with a .26% blood alcohol content. That is three times the legal limit!
When police interviewed her, she told them she drank two bottles of vanilla extract and got lost on her way home. Police found to bottles of vanilla extract that had an alcohol content of 41%. Here is what one news station reported about pure vanilla extract:
Surprised by the alcohol content of pure vanilla extract? Other spice rack products are even worse. Pure peppermint extract contains 89% alcohol and pure lemon extract is 83%. The imitation varieties of these products are usually lower, but still contain alcohol. (Imitation vanilla extract has about 17% alcohol, imitation lemon about 34% and imitation peppermint, about 62%).
Kesel was charged with felony DWI and felony aggravated DWI.
Did you know vanilla extract and other extracts contain that much alcohol?
