One Utah mom’s worst nightmare came true this week after she watched a man drive away in her car with her 3-year-old son still in the backseat. Elizabath Barrios had quickly run in to her baby’s daycare center to drop him off and had left her doors unlocked and running.
She quickly called 911, and the dispatcher called her cell phone that was left in the car. Thankfully, her son Aidan was able to type in the password and answered the phone. Apparently the call must have startled the carjacker, because he took off on foot leaving the boy alone.
Dispatchers told him to honk the horn of the car until they could locate him, which they were able to 5 minutes later. He was a few blocks from the daycare center.
“I’m so glad we found him as fast as we did,” said Barrios to KFOR News, who said she would never again leave her car running during quick stops. “Just be very careful. Even if you don’t think it can happen to you, it can. It can.”
