A pre-school teacher in Buffalo, NY recently took it upon herself to send home a letter to the parents of her 3 and 4-year-old students. The letter reprimands parents for sending their children to school dirty.
According to the letter, some of the children are coming to school with “soiled, stained or dirty clothing…that give off unpleasant smells.”
She then goes on to say that because of this, it makes it very hard for her to touch them or even want to be near them.
Buffalo is a very urban city with a high poverty level. Obviously these three and four-year-olds can’t help what condition their clothing are in, but can their parents? Some families might lack running water or the money to wash clothing at the laundromat. Do you think the wording in this letter was fair or did it lack tact?
