Digital kidnapping is when people steal photos of your child and uses them to role play online.
One mother said her child’s picture was stolen and she found it by following the hashtag #BabyRP. Just a warning that some of the things found on a search of that hashtag were disturbing.
BabyRP is an online community of mostly tween and teen girls. They are creating stories for the pictures they “borrow.” Some even make false adoption agencies with backstories for the pictures they share. Some of these girls are even talking about things like breastfeeding and naked babies.
There are a few groups that are hoping Instagram will pull these role-playing accounts down. However, most parents may not even know that their photos have been stolen. Instagram will remove the pictures if they are notified of a violation.
How can you find out if your images have been stolen?
- Do a reverse image search on Google. This can help you see if your images are being used on other websites or social networks.
What do you need to do to keep your images from being stolen?
- Mark any photos you post in a public space with a watermark or your signature.
