Police Allegedly Assault Pregnant Woman, But Who Is At Fault?

Multiple deputies were sent to a home to assist Child Protective Services in the transfer of a child. The mother of the child became irate and was handcuffed and shoved against a counter. The woman says the police punched her three times in the back. The police say she was going for an officer’s gun. The video isn’t clear, so who is at fault?

Deanna Robinson, of Texas, admits that she told the deputies not to touch her child and that she was combative. They were there because her 18-month-old son was being taken into state custody after an argument with her husband.  She said they handcuffed her and pushed her into a corner.  Her home security camera catches one of the punches and then shuts off. Here is the short video, she is yelling and there is a baby crying in the video.  This could be upsetting to some people.

As of Wednesday the Hunt County Sheriff’s Department has not yet received a formal complaint from Deanna Robinson or her attorneys.

Apparently, this started when Robinson’s six-year-old stepson said his father had hit him and that his father and stepmother had hit each other.  The father denies there was any hitting. CPS said they expected a confrontation and that is why the sheriff’s office was there to assist.

There have been no charges filed against Robinson for allegedly reaching for the gun. However, she was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, assault on a public servant, and interference with child custody. She was in jail for five days and the jail’s head nurse has reported there were no bruises.  Robinson has posted pictures after her release from jail with large bruises on her stomach.

She did ultimately give birth to a healthy baby boy, but is extremely upset about the encounter.

“There’s absolutely no excuse and no justification for what happened to me,” Deanna Robinson said. “They could have killed my baby. I am not guilty of any of the things I’m being accused of. I didn’t assault anyone…They’re going to try to paint it in whatever light they can to try to increase the controversy to try to hide the truth.”

It seems there are more reasons to question a police officer’s account of what happened, but there are also more videos to show how things really happened. In this instance, the woman was clearly combative and admitted it, but should she have been hit or even shoved into a corner?

Most of the comments on the original story are overwhelmingly in support of the pregnant woman. People are coming to her defense saying that she should never have been treated that way. On the other side there are comments from those who say that she should not have gotten in the way of CPS and she should not have yelled at the deputies or resisted arrest.

Since there have been no formal complaints from Robinson, it will be interesting to see where this story goes.  The most important thing in this situation is that the children are safe and out of harm’s way.
