Keep Your Thumbs on the Wheel

This past week a family of six was hit head on by a distracted driver. They were all injured to the point of being life flighted to four different hospitals.  How did this happen? The woman who swerved into their lane said she was adjusting the volume on her GPS.  She was distracted and charges are pending.  The parents have multiple broken bones, internal injuries, and a long road of recovery.  The kids had varying degrees of injury, but were not as seriously injured as their parents.  This is not an isolated event.  There are more accidents due to distracted drivers than ever before.

According to AAA, more than 5,000 traffic-related deaths are caused by drivers paying more attention to cell phones, eating, and passengers than driving.  This is a nationwide problem and police are starting to take notice.  According to the Denver Police, it is illegal in the State of Colorado to text, email or surf the Internet while driving a motor vehicle even when stopped in traffic or at a red light.  “Last year Denver Police officers issued nearly 6,900 careless driving citations, and it is our goal that we don’t write any more this year,” said Denver Police Chief Robert White in a statement. “Drivers need to remove all distractions while driving and remember that behind the wheel is not the place to multitask.”
