A Minnesota principal sent a letter to all parents in his school asking for their help. He wants students to cover their bottoms up when they wear leggings or spandex pants to school. He told a local news station that there is a new trend of wearing shorter shirts with leggings instead of long shirts that cover their bottoms. He said it is “distracting to a wide variety of boys and girls in school.
Principal Dave Adney said he has had support from parents and staff from other area high schools. The letter has prompted some parents to sit down and talk with their children about appropriate school attire. However, some students aren’t happy with the principal’s plea. One student said, “If a girl feels comfortable in what they are wearing, then it should be accepted and not prohibited.” The school has not banned leggings, they are just asking girls to cover up a little more when they wear them.
Other schools in the country have banned skinny jeans, leggings, ripped pants, and low-cut tops. It seems schools that have uniforms don’t have to go through these kind of debates.
Do you think a school should have suggestions for dress codes or just set a standard? Should schools have a uniform as a way to eliminate any dress code problems?
