Make it Yourself: Magnetic Board

This is a super easy project you can do yourself. There are lots of uses for a magnetic board around the house. You can hand one up for keeping track of notes, use it for pictures or hang one on your child’s level and put numbers and letters on it for a learning experience.

Here’s how to make this magnetic board.

  1. Head over to a local automotive store and buy an oil drip pan. They are usually about $10.
  2. They come with grease already on them, you’ll have to use a degreasing cleaning agent, like Simple Green, to get the pan clean.
  3. Hang the pan on the wall. We found the easiest way to hang it is using velcro wall hangers, like these.
Another Option for Making a Magnetic Message Board or Bulletin Board:

  • Buy a piece of zinc-coated steel (aluminum and stainless steel will not hold magnets).
  • Cut it to fit a frame you already have or you can make your own from trim. (If you bring in the measurements of your steel, Home Depot can probably cut the trim for you. You can then use wood glue and/or finishing nails to make the trim into a frame.)
  • If you are using a premade frame, you can buy or borrow scissors that cut steel and just cut the steel to fit the frame.
  • Use spray adhesive to spray the metal and attach your favorite fabric.
  • Lay down the fabric a little at a time so you don’t get air bubbles or wrinkles under it.
  • Put the fabric covered steel in the frame and hang!
Ideas for using this magnetic board:
  • If this is for a child’s room you can use a hot glue gun to make your own magnets with whatever small things you have, like dice, dominoes, plastic animals.
  • Laminate pictures or letters and attach a bit of magnet sticker to the back. You can do matching games or number games.
  • One of the easiest ways to make this child friendly is to buy a pack of alphabet magnets and number magnets from the dollar store and use those.
