Pre-School and Day Care are the two main choices for parents when deciding what’s best for their kids. There are some differences and it largely depends on whether both parents work.
Here are some of the big differences in day care and pre-school.
Learning Philosophy
Day cares USUALLY don’t have an education philosophy as part of their programs. Pre-schools usually adhere to a curriculum: Montessori, Reggio, etc. Day care is usually playing, eating, with someone caring for the kid’s needs.
Time
Day care is usually for working parents who need someone to watch their children all day long or during specific hours. Pre-School is usually during certain days and times. My son’s pre-school was three days a week, 3 hours a day. Many pre-schools have summers off and follow school schedules. Day care is usually available year round.
Money
Day care is usually fairly priced, unless there is a specific reason for it to cost more, like educational purposes or highly trained teachers. Pre-schools tend to be a bit more expensive, even though your kids are there less time than in day care. Pre-school teachers tend to be more trained and therefore cost more money.
The decision is one only you and your family can make. You should learn as much as you can about wherever you decide to send your child. Try to find recommendations from other parents of children who’ve attended the pre-school or daycare. Make sure you take your child’s personality into account. It’s important to pick a place where your child will be happy and thrive.
