School dress codes seem to be getting more strict.
Loveland High School in Ohio has put students in in-school suspension, sent dozens of students home and reprimanded even more for a dress code violation: wearing yoga pants. Yoga pants are typically light-weight, clingy pants and are usually very comfortable. The school superintendent released a written statement.
“We are committed to providing an appropriate educational environment while respecting the students’ freedom of expression,” said superintendent John Marschhausen. “The district will be reviewing the dress code policies and procedures that led to this event and will provide more defined expectations in the near future.”
Most of the students say wearing yoga pants is just like wearing sweat pants. They claim they aren’t a distraction and there is really nothing about the pants that stands out. One student stated, “Being banned from yoga pants and telling us they’re revealing and unacceptable is just not right. They go down to your legs; they cover everything.”
District 11, here in Colorado Springs, says no flip-flops, no saggy clothes and no skirts or dresses above mid-thigh. Does that mean cheerleaders aren’t allowed to wear their uniforms to school? Many girls, who aren’t cheerleaders, have been asked to change clothes because of short skirts. These girls are claiming cheerleaders get special treatment. On the other hand, cheerleaders only wear their uniforms to school on days their teams wear their jerseys, so it’s tradition.
School districts across the country are creating strict dress codes. They want the students to be more professional and take their education more serious. Many administrators say a change in student dress reflects what teachers are wearing. Younger teachers aren’t dressing like older teachers. Coats and ties used to be standard for teachers, that isn’t so true in many schools these days.
I’m all for strict dress codes, in fact, I saw uniforms should be mandatory in every school, especially high school. I support the “baggy pants law” for every school, in every state. Showing off underwear is inappropriate and definitely doesn’t belong in schools. Girls shouldn’t be allowed to wear tight or skimpy clothes. School is a place to learn, not a fashion show. Stricter guidelines, when it comes to clothes, are necessary.
What do you think: Should schools have strict dress codes or should it even matter what kids wear to school?
