Graphic Tee Slogans Causing Controversy

I’m all for funny graphic tees if you’re old enough to buy them yourself and actually understand the meaning of the shirt. I even think some of the toddler-aimed shirts like, “Chicks Dig Me” onesies are adorable, but some clothing companies are taking the whole trend WAY too far.

David & Goliath took the trend to a new level in the past with shirts like “Future Trophy Wife” and “I’m too pretty to do math.”

J.C. Penney removed a shirt from their website today after getting complaints for customers about a shirt sold for girls that read, “I’m too pretty to go my homework so my brother has to do it for me.”

The message of the shirt is a terrible one on several levels — that academics should be left to boys, that you can’t be pretty and smart, that beauty gives you an advantage over others, and I could go on.

Although I find that shirt pretty bad, it’s the one that really bothers me is “Admit it. You’d go to jail for this.” really? The crude shirt is sold mainly in juniors departments of several large online retailers. It’s appalling that someone thought that selling a shirt even suggesting relationships with underage children is disgusting.

Do you buy or let your tweens and teens wear humorous graphic tees? Where do you draw the lines on what is appropriate?
