My name is Alexandra McClain, mother of two very busy and very engaged boys (8 and10 years old). We moved to Colorado Springs in 2012, after being overseas for 10 years. My youngest son has a severe case of ADHD, and I was searching for a way to help him to get his self- esteem back and to be able to focus better. He started taking classes at the U.S. Taekwondo Center -Citadel shortly after we got here, and he enjoyed it to the fullest.
While my husband was deployed I struggled getting both of my kids to their practices, while working full time. Not long after my son started his classes, I decided to give it a try, and I am glad I did. I enjoy taking classes with him and to see him strive. Although he is a bit ahead of me, I find my motivation in him to go to classes regularly, fighting my inner demons and health issues. What I enjoy most of all is the fact that he has matured immensely and was even able to take classes during the summer without being on his medication, which was a huge improvement, and I am hoping that his self control will only continue to grow. His self- control has improved, and his self-esteem is going up. My oldest son and now also my husband sit through our classes and do not complain at all. My son (10) is our photographer when we take our belt tests. I feel like taking classes together helps us bond even more.
Besides taekwondo I enjoy photography and interior design. My job here allows me to spend the most time with my kids. It is hard for families to find time together in this fast pacing society, but taekwondo allows us to be together, to challenge each other and to succeed mentally and physically. For that I am grateful! I am honored to be nominated for my719moms.com, and I hope that reading my little story inspires others.
