It’s probably not a situation we think of very often, if at all – but what should happen to a child if their parent is arrested and there is no one else to take care of them right away?
This recently happened to Ohio mother, Latonya Bass. She was caught shoplifting more than $500 worth of merchandise from a local Walmart while her 3 year old daughter sat in the cart. Police took both the child and the mother to the police station where they were placed in a cell until the child’s father could come and get her.
Police stated that they did so because they felt it was best the child stay with someone familiar rather than being separated and placed with strangers. The child’s mother says that she is now terrified of police officers.
