Divorce is difficult for parents and children, but one expert is saying it is especially stressful for children under the age of 4-years-old. A UK parenting expert says that pre-school children should not spend the night with their fathers. She says that just one night away from their mother can cause longterm problems.
Psychologist, Penelope Leach, writes in her new book Family Breakdown, that the “rights of a child must always outweigh those of the parents.” She argues that parents see children as a possession instead of a person by claiming it is ‘only fair’ for the father and mother to share custody. She claims there is “undisputed” evidence that separating children from their mothers “reduces brain development” and creates a tendency toward “unhealthy attachment issues.” Of course, many fathers have said this is completely wrong and that fathers need to spend time with their young children.
This is a point of contention for parents, but the truth is that priority should always be with the best needs of the children. Is it easier on kids to sleep in one place and have limited separation from their mother? Is it always the best for kids to spend time with both parents?
