The picture below is graphic but amazing. Newborn Silas Philips was born 3 months early at only 26 weeks gestation. He was delivered by C-section at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Another amazing aspect about his birth was that the amniotic sac remained intact after delivery. Normally the pressure of delivery, whether vaginal or caesarean, is enough to break the sac.
Neonatologist William Binder was so shocked and impressed by the rare event that he took a picture with his cell phone. He described the birth as “a moment of awe”.
This rare occurrence happens in less than 1 out of 80,000 births. There is no harm to the baby when this happens, as it’s still being nourished by the placenta and will take it’s first breath after the sac is broken.
Doctors say Silas is doing well and should be home in about a month.
