Have you ever seen a baby that was so cute you just wanted to bite it? Not to hurt it, but just a little nibble? Maybe you want to pinch their cheeks? Don’t worry it is completely normal. In fact it is a real response to emotions.
“Dimorphous expressions” help us control our emotions, mainly our positive emotions. This is where tears of joy come from. Psychological scientists at Yale University conducted multiple studies about this phenomenon.
“People may be restoring emotional equilibrium with these expressions,” said psychological scientist and lead researchers Oriana Aragon of Yale University. “They seem to take place when people are overwhelmed with strong positive emotions, and people who do this seem to recover better from those strong emotions.”
Don’t worry if you’re overwhelmed by the cuteness and want to cry or pinch cheeks, it is completely normal and it is just your body trying to balance strong emotions.
