“Vaping” is growing in popularity as an alternative to cigarettes. Liquid nicotine is a major part of this process and can be dangerous for children. The liquid nicotine comes in many different flavors including gummy bear and cotton candy.

Fort Plain, New York police reported that a one-year-old child died after ingesting a liquid nicotine. He was unresponsive, rushed to the hospital, and while there pronounced dead. They are saying it was a “tragic accident.”

However, health officials believe that there could be similar accidents if children are not protected. “One teaspoon of liquid nicotine could be lethal to a child, and smaller amounts can cause severe illness, often requiring trips to the emergency department,” the American Association of Poison Control centers in a statement. “Despite the dangers these products pose to children, there are currently no standards set in place that require child-proof packaging.”

If you use liquid nicotine in your home, make sure it is secured out of reach of children. It should be secured in the same way as medicines and cleaning supplies. Children will try anything once, especially if it is brightly colored or smells good.
