Rachel Aviles was a senior at The Master’s School in West Simsbury, Connecticut. She told the truth about being gay and was asked to withdraw or be expelled. It all started during a school trip last spring. Some of the girls were calling each other wifey and pretending to be married. The administration called this “outrageous behavior” and began asking all of those involved about their sexual orientation.
Aviles, who doesn’t claim to be a Christian, but was respectful the religion, admitted she was gay. She did withdraw, but she should have been forced to? One of her former coaches, Heather Lodovico asked Aviles if she was pregnant and Aviles’ resonse was, “No, worse. I’m gay.” She told the media that she didn’t want Master’s School to look bad. “Just because you’ve been wronged doesn’t mean you have the right to wrong back.”
“She’s a fantastic kid,” said Lodovico. “My reaction was: ‘Wow. Your God’s really small.’ Whether it’s a sin or not, take that out of the picture, and this is still wrong. I think God’s up there shaking His head going, ‘Really? Really?’
I am a Christian and I have gay friends. I agree with the coach on this one, I’m not sure this is something God would have condoned. I attended three different Christian schools growing up and I know this same thing would have happened at at least two of them. I always felt that actions like these, by Christians, were wrong and totally against the Christian faith.
If it were in the school rules/policy that gays were not allowed to attend, I can stand by the school’s decision. However, if it wasn’t there, then there was no reason to kick out a great student.
What do you think? Should she have been kicked out of school?
