Farmers’ markets are great places to get the most fresh, local produce, but you have to be aware to get the best deals and real local produce.
- Know what is in season in the local area. Check out a harvest or ripening guide to aid you.
- Walk around the market before buying. Vendors will often scout out others to see who’s offering better prices and will match or offer better deals.
- You can always ask if they’ll take less, especially if you’re buying a large amount. Be polite and offer a fair price.
- Go later in the day. Vendor will be ready to make rock-bottom price offers to offload produce so they don’t have to take it home with them again.
- If you want something specific, like bread from an artisan baker, go early in the morning before it has a chance to sell out.
- Buy in bulk! Plan ahead to freeze or can, or go with a friend. Bushel baskets are often cheaper than smaller pints or single item purchases.
