Should you drink alcohol while pregnant? Depending on who you ask determines what answer you get. Some say a little won’t hurt, while others say none at all. Then your aunt’s half sister’s cousin had a glass of wine every night and her kid is a certifiable genius. What about that kid with ADHDRSTF who’s mom never drank and look at all the problems he has? Well, the American Academy of Pediatrics has come out with their advice and it seems to be consistent with their previous views.
No alcohol at all during pregnancy. Pregnant women should not drink any alcohol at all.
“The real measure [of how safe alcohol is] is how much are you willing to compromise the potential health and well-being of this baby,” said Dr Janet Williams, lead author of the survey to be published in the journal Pediatrics. The study reemphasized that there is no “safe” level of alcohol consumption for pregnant women.
During pregnancy:
-
no amount of alcohol intake should be considered safe;
-
there is no safe trimester to drink alcohol;
-
all forms of alcohol, such as beer, wine, and liquor, pose similar risk; and
-
binge drinking poses dose-related risk to the developing fetus.
This may not be what mothers want to hear, but these are the facts. The bottom line is if you want to do all you can do have a healthy baby, that means not drinking alcohol while pregnant.
