Girls and body image are constantly in the news. As a society, we want to teach our daughters to love themselves and be happy in their skin. That is what makes this story so controversial.
A “Dear Santa” sign at a Dillard’s store in Florida upset a mother of three. She took a photo of it and shared it on Facebook. She says it was shocking to see the message in the girl’s department. The sign said:
Dear Santa,
Please give me a big fat bank account and a slim body.
Please don’t mix those two up like you did last year.
The mom who posted the image, Sally Stewart, said this is not the message we should be sending our kids. “It’s kinda funny because a woman who wants to wish for that should make it happen for herself…What would a little girl want with a bank account? It gives the wrong message about having a slim body.”
The Dillard’s employees say the sign was not meant to be posted in the children’s section and has been removed.
Did this mom overreact or was this out of line?
