A recent story in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has ruffled more than a few feathers. A father who failed to pay his child support was jailed. A former veteran, who lost his job last year was sent to jail for failing to pay child support for his 16 year old daughter. His attorney is saying it is unconstitutional for the man to be jailed and is working to get him released. Currently in the state of Georgia there are over 500 parents incarcerated because they have failed to pay child support.
When parents are given the choice: jail or pay the amount owed for child support, most pick jail, because they are unable to come up with the money. I’m not sure jail is the right answer for these parents. It is a tough economy and it seems most, average Americans are scraping by to make ends meet. The man was obviously doing his best, working at a part time job while seeking another job.
What do you think? Should this man be in jail or allowed to remain free and seek employment?
