Today, in the store, I overheard a mom talking to another mom about what they were handing out for Halloween.
Mom #1: “We don’t do candy at our house. We’ll be passing out crayons and glosticks.”
Mom #2: “You don’t ‘do’ candy? What about everything the kids bring home?”
Mom #1: “We let them have a few pieces and throw out the rest.”
I had a little fit right there, in my head, of course. I can’t imagine what would happen if I didn’t pass out candy to the neighborhood kids and tried to tell my kids they could only pick a few pieces. Now, before you bombard me, they have a limit on Halloween night, but we save the rest and they get to eat it gradually. It’s all about the candy and costumes for us.
I love passing out the “good” candy. It keeps the nighborhood kids on my good side and they really do appreciate chocolate bars and chewing gum. I realize we are in a health conscience world. Moms everywhere are trying to feed their kids healthy foods and keep them active. I agree and I’m right there with those moms. My kids rarely get candy throughout the rest of the year. It’s a special treat for them and they appreciate the bags of sugary goodness. There is nothing wrong with getting lots of candy and passing out candy one night a year.
How about you: Do you pass out candy? Do you let your kids keep their candy? What is your favorite candies to pass out? Favorite candies to eat?
