Nursing a baby is both a rewarding and time consuming endeavor. It is a wonderful way to bond with your child, as well as give them the nutritional requirements their developing bodies need. It does however require a lot of time and energy on mom’s behalf, which is why it’s amazing that Davina Wright, mother of triplets is still nursing them at 3-years-old.
Wright, 45, says she will continue nursing her two daughters and son as long as she can.
They are typical and healthy toddlers with busy days. They play and run and talk as average 3-year-old’s do. Wright says by the end of the day, she uses nursing to lull them each to sleep.
When they were newborns she was nursing 30-40 times a day compared to only twice a day now. Typically, it is now only 15-20 minutes out of their whole day. Once in the morning when they wake, and once before bed time.
Wright will not nurse in public though.
“I say that we will wait until we are home for that now, simply because I am aware of how many eyes are on us. But they are still happy with it and I am still happy with it and it works for our family so we keep going,” she told Daily Mail Australia.
She realizes nursing her toddlers doesn’t win favor with everyone. “I would say to people if it’s not for you then don’t do it, simple as that,” she said.
Erica Brody, MD, MS, IBCLC, Director of Pediatric Breastfeeding Medicine at the Kravis Children’s Hospital at Mount Sinai Hospital says the practice is fine. She tells Daily Mail “Breastfeeding should continue as long as is mutually desired. Unfortunately in our culture, many are still squeamish at the sight of breastfeeding toddlers, and even judgmental. The simple fact is that these are personal opinions, which vary in different societies. I always tell the moms I work with that they should continue until they’re no longer enjoying it, whether that be 3 weeks, 3 months, or 3 years.”
