A Florida mom says her daughter is paralyzed because she had a flu shot. “She was a happy and healthy, running 9-year-old and then this happened.” Carla Grivna says her daughter Marysue was fine for about three days. One morning, though, she couldn’t move or talk. They took her to the ER and it took about a week for a diagnosis.
Mom says that her child is now bedridden and has been diagnosed with a rare viral infection of the brain called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis, or ADEM. Doctors have not confirmed or denied that the flu shot was responsible for Marysue’s condition.
Dr. Juan Dumois said the disease can just appear out of the blue or after a surgical procedure. He says the risk of this disease does not outweigh the benefits of a flu shot and he suggests getting a flu shot for everyone who can.
