New sleep study for babies makes us rethink the “cry it out” method

We had the cry it out debate in my family. I couldn’t do it. My sister did. Her son cried and cried in his crib until he realized she wasn’t picking him up and laid down and went to sleep. I couldn’t stand to hear my son scream. I couldn’t make it past the first few minutes. I made excuses that as a working mom, that was part of my only time with him all day and I needed it be pleasant. She was a stay at home mom and bed time was bed time!

Either way, both cousins, now 5 years old, sleep well through the night and have no recollection of those early years.

But a new study suggests, sleep is a genetic thing and babies develop sleep habits based on their own DNA.

“Genetics explained 47% of variability in how long kids slept without waking up their parents at 6 months of age, 58% at 30 months, and 54% at 48 months.” HERE.

Did you sleep train your kids? Do you agree with the study?
