As many as 13 New York City high schools are giving out morning-after pills and birth control products to students. A citywide program, called CATCH (Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health) is meant to reduce teen pregnancy. In the past schools have given out condoms, but now they are able to give out injectable birth controls and “Plan B.” Girls as young as 14-years-old can receive these without parental permission, unless the parents sign out of the program.
News “about 7,000 girls get pregnant by the time they reach the age of 17 and that more than half of them choose to get an abortion. The Department of Health told the NY Post that in a pilot program for five city schools last year, 567 students received Plan B tablets and 580 students received Reclipsen birth control pills.” The program started in December of 2011.
