One hand-me-down that parents shouldn’t take

For parents of young ones — or those expecting — “hand-me downs” are a big help, but local health experts are warning you to hold off from one item.

It’s your car seat. Memorial Health System specialists say most parents don’t realize that their car seats only have a six-year life span from the day they are made. You can find an expiration date on the back.

“Most of them are just because of technology or because the plastic does break down with the heat and cooling of our climate,” says Laura McGuire-Kent, a child passenger safety specialist for Memorial Health System.

They also say it’s also important to look at changing your car seat after getting into an accident; that can also compromise the integrity of the materials.

If you want to get your car seat checked out they’ll be doing free inspections outside of the Citadel Mall this Saturday. There will also be tons of stuff going on inside the mall too for parents; it’s all free from 10 a.m. until two. It’s the Healthy Baby Fair, being put on by El Paso County Health.
