A group of parents protested their school district’s recess policy. Lake County School District, in Florida, says it will not require schools to give elementary students more than an hour of recess a week. It is left to principals at each school to decide if children should have more time than that.

The protesting parents and grandparents wanted their elementary school children to have at least 30 minutes of recess every day. According to the CDC, recess is “unstructured play.” This Monday, the school district’s superintendent, Susan Moxley, made the decision to require one hour of recess per week. Parents were not thrilled about the decision, but felt it was a step in the right direction. “It’s not what we were asking for but we’re getting there,” parent Kristi Burns, told news outlet WKMG-TV.

How much time do your kids get for recess? Do you think it is important for kids to have unstructured playtime at school?
