Proposed Safety Regs for Blind Cords Still Not Enough

Even with proposed changes to cords on window blinds and shades, safety experts say it’s still not enough.

The new proposal still allows manufacturers to produce exposed cords that pose a strangulation hazard. One child per month dies as a result of strangulation in cording for window blinds and shares, according to government regulators.

Inez Tenenbaum, chairperson of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is urging the Window Covering Manufacturers Association to eliminate exposed cords altogether.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association sets their own voluntary safety regulations, although safety groups and industry experts to give input. Only in certain instances do government regulators step in to make mandatory regulations. The association’s director has pointed out that safety experts and health care reps are consulted, but those same experts told the Tribune that they are being ignored.

What do you do to protect your kids from the hazards with window blind cords? Should the government step in and make mandatory regulations?
