Public Embarassment to Discipline Kids?

Most of us have been there–you’re at your wits end, aren’t sure how else to handle your child’s tantrums or behavior at the moment, but most of us have never gone the lengths of making our child weara sign and Shrek ears to shame them publicly.

An Australian mother is under fire for just that.

The mother, who is not being identified, printed and laminated signs that read “Do not trust me. I will steal from you as I am a thief.” and made her child — who is believed to be about 10 years old — wear Shrek ears in a busy park.

Several passersby reported the incident to the Australian equivalent of child services. One woman also reported that the mother told her son, “Put them back on or I’ll smack your head in.”

The mother is defending her reactions as a last resort. She has reportedly has dealt with his shoplifting and theft for three years, and has even taken him to a police station to have officers show him cells.

Do you think her unique way of discipline was warranted, or was it cruel and abuse? What do you do when you’re at your wit’s end with bad behavior?
