This is a great project for you and your kids. You can use old socks or sew fabric to make the tube. Fill it with rice and put it in front of your windows or doors. This will keep cold air from seeping in through unsealed spaces. According to the US Department of Energy, drafts use up anywhere from 5 to 30% of home energy and 11% of a home’s heat loss is through doors and windows.

You can use old socks filled with rice as quick and easy draft busters. You can also use heavy fabric, like denim or corduroy, sewn in a tube and filled with rice or dry beans. We’ve also seen knit tights filled with dry beans and simply knotted at the end. The kids part of the process is filling the tubes with rice or beans. You can add a couple of google eyes and a tongue at the end to make a “snake.”
