School Pays Students Not to Skip Class

A New Jersey school is paying high school students to come to class. The program is called ICE-T, which stands for “I Can End Truancy,” and the money is coming from a state grant. Susan Goyins, the vice principal, says the students need incentive not to skip school. “Some of them have commitments to younger brothers and sisters, some of them have commitments to older parents, and some of them are actually raising themselves so we have to look and see why the truancy exists and then try to couple them with resources to overcome them.”

If they go to MOST of their classes they get $100 at the end of the month. The students also attend anti-truancy sessions. The students signed a pledge to attend classes the rest of the school year. Some officials were not supportive of the measure. They called the plan outrageous and said it sends the wrong message to students.

What do you think about this? Should students be bribed to go to school?
