A 7-year-old special education child was allegedly being caged by her first grade teacher at a Fresno County school.
Her mother, Ledelldra Brooks says she discovered the abuse in May when she made an unannounced visit to the child’s school and found her daughter in the cage. She was also wearing a soiled diaper. Brooks called the police and hired a lawyer. The case is under investigation, even though both the teacher and principal admitted to caging the child when she was being “out of control.”
The makeshift cage was made from a crib gate and toddler gate attached to shelving in the classroom. The teacher and teacher’s aide said that children who were misbehaving or who were acting out of control were put in it for their own safety.
The child has since been enrolled in a new school.
