There are many teachers who are passionate about what they do and leave a positive mark on our souls. I know I had several growing up. However, one teacher from Canada might just take the cake.

Each year, Bruce Ferrar gives his students an assignment – to write a 10 page letter to themselves. He holds on to the letters and then amazingly tracks them down 20 years later to deliver it. It takes quite a bit of detective work to make this happen. He says he doesn’t mind, and tells ABC 7 news “The kids are going every which way, and this excites me.”

Farrer is astonished by the attention his assignment has received and stays humble through all the thanks his students have given him. He thoroughly enjoys getting updates on their lives.

How do the students feel? Many say it’s shocking, but that they love remembering what they were like 20 years ago, and it helps them appreciate where they were and how far they’ve come. More than anything though, they are inspired by his dedication.

Ferrar says “I’m just a regular teacher who happened to assign a rather different assignment.”

The video below spotlights Ferrar, and was produced by Canadian airliner WestJet as part of their Above and Beyond series which profiles inspiring people.
