I remember talking to a friend not all that long ago about a Spanish-immersion program for kindergartners and thinking what a great idea it would be to teach another language so young. My daughter learns Spanish in preschool, but only the basics, so I thought a program like that would give her a leg up. Turns out, even kindergarten is too long according to a recent study.
A study in the Journal of Phonetics shows that babies recognize the small nuances between languages in early infancy, but stop noticing those sounds at about 11 months. The research was performed by the University of Washington’s Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences.
The study also compared babies raised in single-language households with those living in bilingual households and found that the babies in bilingual households maintained the ability to learn a language longer.
Do/did you have your baby learning another language in infancy?
