A pregnant woman says she was “flabbergasted” when a waitress refused to serve her “sparkling wine.” The mom-to-be, Nichola Hayes, said she asked for a glass of wine with her pizza. She ordered the wine, but the waitress returned empty handed.
The waitress said to her “she thought she had misunderstood me and asked if I was pregnant.” The waitress then said she was uncomfortable serving pregnant women alcohol.
The New Zealand Herald reported the bar manager said he had been trained not to serve alcohol to pregnant women. While the woman understood his stance, she felt the establishment was “pushing the boundary of host responsibility and being just a little bit too cautious”.
“If I was in their shoes and a woman who was pregnant was ordering up large, I’d be questioning it as well,” she said…But I’m an educated woman who knows the limits and have been so careful throughout the whole pregnancy.”
She said it was one drink on her wedding anniversary and it was not up to the bar to make that choice for her.
What do you think: Should the bar have served her or is it up to the bar to decide who they will serve?
