It’s my goal to get out to all of the public pools in Colorado Springs this summer. I, like every mom I know, don’t have a ton of time to spare, but today felt like a great day to take my little peanut to the pool. We spent the morning at Wilson Ranch Pool, an outdoor pool off Cenntennial and Garden of the Gods.
My overall impression…it was GREAT!
There are pros and cons with every pool, but the list of pros far outweighs the list of cons at this pool. It has great ammenities (snack bar, clean locker rooms, plenty of lounging space and grass to set up camp). Although we arrived just after it opened at 11 a.m., we didn’t really “beat the rush” like we had hoped. It was busy and crowded all day long, but the lifeguards handled the crowds well and I only got kicked once or twice by a pre-tween swimming by. I do wish they had more lounge chairs, but next time I’ll just plan to pack my camping chairs and not worry about fighting for a lounger. Another big plus, we were able to bring in outside food and have a picnic on the grass.
The only thing wrong at the pool, many of the water features (hoses, sprayers, other water features) did not appear to be working. For example, when you pull the giant ropes, that I’m assuming cause water to dump somewhere, there was no water dumping. It didnt’ seem like anyone really missed all those bells and whistles, but I wanted to note it.
Worth mentioning, there is a 10 minute “safety check and potty break” every hour. The pools are cleared of anyone under 18 years old for 10 minutes. Many adults hit the pool during that 10 minute window, and I took full advantage of that break to reapply sunscreen on the babies, serve a quick snack, change diapers and hit the restroom.
All in all, it was a great experience and I highly recommend a visit to Wilson Ranch Pool (which I learned is City-owned and YMCA operated) before the summer comes to an end.
