When Principal Nissa Ellet noticed that many of her students had worn out shoes, she decided to do something about it. Teachers had been mending student’s shoes and boots with duct tape and staples. Ellet said this was a bigger problem than she realized.

After starting a program, Shoes for Students, the school raised $6,000 for the kids. However, they ended up with over $17,000 and were able to buy students more than just a new pair of shoes. They also received snow boots, gloves, hats, scarves, a hoodie, and candy. The school surprised the students at a special assembly.

Students were very thankful, “They are warmer than my other shoes were” and “As soon as it snows, I’m going to go out there and just wear them.”

This was an amazing show of community support and educators willing to go beyond academics.
