Is Your Man Good Enough For Your Mom? This Girl’s Blue-Collar Boyfriend Isn’t

A gal recently wrote into Carolyn Hax of “The Washington Post” about her Mom’s problem with her “blue-collar” boyfriend. The girl writes, “My mom basically despises my boyfriend, “Tom,” because he didn’t graduate college and works a blue-collar job. She is so rude to him we can’t even be around her. She defends this by saying that looking at us together makes her feel disgusted, she can’t help how she feels, and she’s being as nice as she can given the intensity of her feelings. Tom actually cried after our last dinner with my parents.”

Carolyn advises her to ask herself if it is her mother or herself telling her she can do better. She should reevaluate why she is with Tom and make sure it is for the right reasons. I’m pretty sure most of us have had boyfriends our Moms disliked. It seems to be a common thing for moms to be nit-picky when it comes to who their daughters are dating.

Did you date or marry someone your mother disliked? Do you have a daughter who has a boyfriend you think isn’t good enough?
